“Without
intending to, without even knowing it, — Gabriel García Márquez «This anthology is a testament to that luminous moment, a vessel harboring the essence of that ephemeral gathering. Within these pages, you shall encounter fragments of ideas woven with silken threads of longing, lines that unravel the mysteries of love and loss, and tones of the infinite contained within the finite. It is an invitation to embark on a journey where words dance, muses sing, and the boundaries of the known yield to the enigmatic world of the unsaid. May this book guide you through the labyrinthine corridors of existence, illuminating the hidden corners of your mind and sharing truths only poetry can unveil. Open your heart, dear reader, and embark on this odyssey into the ocean of bliss woven on that New Year’s Day, where poetry reigns as the eternal language of all humankind.» — The Arcade Of The Scribes |

“Momma, looks like I've made it!” — C. D. Johnson This is the 8th volume in a series of anthologies. Over the years, this series, and its parent event, has featured hundreds of poets and hundreds of written works, for the enjoyment of thousands of people who have gathered in the Village year after year on January 1st, New Year’s Day, to hear these words spoken in person. But this is sadly the second year in a row in which Covid-19 has interrupted the historic live-reading event, the Alternative New Year’s Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza! But those voices aren’t silent. In their assemblage, aggregation, and diversity, they still scream loud from the empty stages of the The Village in New York City — and beyond — to let us know: « The Poet never dies! » ...They just drift in and out of this world like the northern winds which bring the summer rains. But, in this case, in the middle of winter. While the Earth may be cold, the breath of the Poet is hot. Steamy. Sticky. Passionate... With Love in the Time of Corona, you may not be able to bring a poet home with you on New Year’s, but you can still invite a few in via the written word. 103 poets and artists who will happily whisper in your ear, one after another, like An Embroidery Of Voices. — Un Bordado De Voces. |

"Frustration is the perfume of perseverance, extracted through the written word." - C. D. Johnson For a time, it seemed as if the world itself was losing its spin. But what it didn't lose is the abundance of words to describe its melancholies, exuberations, and indignations — words spun and woven from the minds of the POET who from antiquity to modernity has struggled to not only understand the nature of the collective struggle, but to employ the ART in putting it to paper and voice, so that it may be plainly understood by all: «We are the Perennials of the Earth and this is our lot.» The multitudes of Poets still howl across the assembled masses today, just as they once did in ancient Chalcis. But is anybody listening? In the time of Covid-19, the audience is so much thinner, so much more distracted than before. So many other things out there to be paying attention to. And yet, the world is not done with poetry. Possibly because at some point, someone actually bothers to pick up the Poets' work and take the time to read the laborious lines — without all the emotionally charged rhetoric, hype and hoopla we've grown used to — and compare them in a fairer light than what is usually offered to us in the immediate. And then, they may find themselves sitting on a field somewhere in Chalcis (symbolically), rooting for the brooding underdog Poet with peculiar manners, profound thoughts, and proactive passions who speaks in normal tones and not the woefully misappropriated rhythmic mimicry of the panderers and the pulpits. Here in this volume, many many words...many many voices. Post Nubila Phoebus. After the Clouds, the Sun... |

One of New York City's biggest literary events featuring more than 150 scheduled performers plus an open, had a new venue this New Year's Day. The 25th Annual Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza took place on January 1, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Greenwich Village, a hub of social, political and cultural ferment. This year's theme was “Before the Dawn”. The Alternative, which continues to be free to the public, features poets, prose writers, monologists, musicians, dancers and other performers in an eight-hour showcase that ranges from some of New York's most seasoned talents to emerging stars. The lineup evolves each year to keep the event fresh and democratic. The Alternative began on New Year's Day in 1995, and quickly became one of the most popular events on the city's poetry and literary scene. Founder Bruce Weber is ably assisted by a staff of writers, designers and curators. Each year a fresh group of performers are plucked from all corners of the Tri-State area to enliven and transform the Alternative in unexpected ways. Adding to the mix for the sixth consecutive, this anthology is comprised of featured writers, published by Rogue Scholars Press under the guidance of C. D. Johnson. This volume features the work of: Austin Alexis, Joel Allegretti, Madeline Artenberg, Dorothy Friedman August, Yael Baron, Jennifer Blowdryer, Ron Blum, Patricia Carragon, YZ Chin, Lydia Cortes, Steve Dalachinsky, Brana Dane, Pete Dolack, Gabriel Don, David Elsasser, Bill Evans, Bonny Finberg, Bryan C. Our
23rd Event And Our 4th Anthology... Amazing! Every year I reconsider the broad strokes and possibilities, and the staff gathers in early winter to talk about new directions and bridges to cross. A major part of our planning is to reach out to new guest curators for assistance in keeping the channels open to new voices and sounds. We also hope to bring in artists we've missed, neglected, or not had back in a while. This year I am especially thrilled by the multitude of new performers that have been added to event. When the Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza began I fantasized about creating an anthology on the spot, with the help of an industrial strength photocopy machine nearby. Now in the age of the internet, and the publishing possibilities the internet has conjured up, plus the masterful hand and eye of C. D. Johnson, we have our fourth annual collection of a selection of works by participants in Forever Night: Siempre Noche. The theme Forever Night: Siempre Noche was chosen in the course of this past overheated summer of Trump and Clinton, and after the theme was selected by the vote of the staff, some staff members wondered if it was perhaps too dark in its insinuations. Now, following the autumn election, we must and we shall persist even harder in our artistry, clinging to art's ever present truth to get us through the forthcoming night ahead. |

One of New York City's biggest literary events, featuring more than 150-scheduled performers, returns to the historic Nuyorican Poets Cafe on New Year's Day. The 22nd annual Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza takes place from 12 pm to 9 pm on January 1st, 2016. As always, the event is free to the public. We ask people attending to please bring paperbacks for Books through Bars, which supports U.S. prison-population education and the expansion of their universe through reading. Since the event's beginning, we have encouraged audience and participants to donate to our charity of choice. This year's theme is “Palabras Luminosas (Luminous Words)” - the light of words connects us – illuminates the human experience – and will light up our world in the New Year. A.N.Y.D.S.W.P.E. / Our 22nd year for the Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza event, and our third year celebrating with an anthology! The talent is overflowing and the pages of this volume burst forth yet again as more than 80 poets and writers give up their words to be sacrificed on the hallowed altar of the Ars Poetica. No doubt both you and the Muses will find their offerings satiating.Where are the masters of word and verse to go from here? Only to fame and glory, my friends! Only to fame and glory! ...Or your bookshelves. That will be nice, too. |

Todos Son Bienvenidos! For 21 years, since curator and poet Bruce Weber first came up with the idea of doing a free ten- hour event in which anyone can read, sing, or perform without competition and without any charge, New York has been treated to the Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza. May it continue for another 21 years, and even long after all of us are gone, for generations to come. Let ANYDSWPE stand as a testament to the history of East Village poetry, and let this anthology serve as a record of that accomplishment. Our 20th Anniversary! Twenty years and we are still burning, burning words, sounds, noise, bringing our spirits to the stage…We are all stars, we will not be incinerated nor eclipsed, our voices in transit as we burn…we burn… we burn… This anthology is a project celebrating The Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza - the 2014 event marking the 20th Anniversary of this uniquely New York tradition. The collection features the diverse work of many of the participants in what is recognizably a very verbose affair; from the seasoned wordsmith, to the literarily licentious, to the cerebrally provocative. A.N.Y.D.S.W.P.E. takes place every year in New York City's historic East Village. Hundreds of people funnel into the venue during an eight hour marathon reading on January 1st. To make the 20th anniversary extra-special, this year it was held at the world-famous Nuyorican Poets Café. Why does such an event exist? Well, if you are going to write poetry, you might as well read it aloud. And if you are going to read it aloud, people might as well come and listen. And if people are going to come and listen, you might as well make a party of it. And if you are going to make a party of it, it might as well be one of the biggest parties of the year, and if it's going to be one of the biggest parties of the year, you might as well invite some of the best artists, writers, and performers to come and entertain the masses. You can also get drunk and fall in love while you're at it. In the event that you cannot make the party, we've put together this convenient little volume so you can sample the wonder, wisdom, brilliance, and madness without having to go outside. And if you did come to the party, well this book was a sure-fire way to take a poet home with you at the end of the night. No need to thank us. Your happiness is the only reward we require. ...That and the price for the copy. Enjoy. See book preview below. |
