“A RHAPSODY IN VIEW”
The first day of 2024 saw a welcome return of the Alternative New Year’s Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza after four years off. Since our 2020 extravaganza, there were of course the years of the COVID-19 pandemic and then, when we thought we would return a year ago, the scourge of gentrification prevented us from securing a location. With our two previous sites again not available for 2024, we had work to do to find a suitable venue, but we did do so.
Seeing all the happy faces across the event’s eight hours, it seems the New York City poetry world was pleased by the event’s return. We certainly were. This year’s was the 27th edition of the event, which has long-established itself as one of the year’s premiere literary events. Where else could you see more than 150 readers and performers in one place in one day? As I like to say when announcing the start of the event each year, we’re an institution.
But the Alternative is an institution thanks to those who read and performed at the event, some for many years. The event’s founder, Bruce Weber, started it for New Year’s Day 1995, holding it in a loft above the Pyramid Club. Bruce didn’t know how the event would be received, but was pleasantly surprised when a packed house pronounced a success. It’s been a success ever since, from those first years in that packed Avenue A loft and through several venues since. I have been a part of organizing the Alternative since the 2000 event and became director upon Bruce leaving New York City for upstate; and, having been a reader in the event since its second year, I always look forward to it. So do a lot of other folks in New York and the surrounding area.
The people who put together the Alternative every year do it as a labor of love. And so it is with the book in your hands, published by C. D. Johnson and Rogue Scholars Press. For the past several years, Rogue Scholars has put together an anthology featuring the event’s readers. In this year’s edition, you’ll find a tremendous range of voices, showcasing some of the outstanding writers of New York City with a bit of their artwork. For those of you who attended, I hope this anthology will enable you to relive the event. And for those of you who couldn’t attend, I hope this collection will entice you to be there next year.

[An] annual happening, an alternative to the annual Poetry Project marathon, has become a tradition itself. One hundred fifty poets and performers—including Miguel Algarin, Jennifer Blowdryer and Hattie Gossett—read their verses. There will also be an open-mike component for those revelers who sign up early enough.

...Years ago a rebel camp started up a free Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza to give voice to a more rambunctious cast of lesser-known ranters and scribblers—though you'll find some of the St. Marks crowd straying over here too. This year's alt roundup is themed "In From the Cold," and features 150-plus performers, including Penny Arcade, Hettie Jones, John S. Hall, Tsaurah Litzky, Bingo Gazingo, Hal Sirowitz, Taylor Mali, Wanda Phipps, and Bob Holman, plus an open mic for those who sign up early. Bring donations of canned food for City Harvest and paperbacks for Books Through Bars, a prison literacy program.

The Alternative New Year’s Day reading extravaganza comes again to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in its 21st year. “Shadow of the Geode” welcomes more than 160 performers of poetry, music, dance and more, plus they offer an open mic throughout the day. Penny Arcade and Miguel Algarin are among those performing against a backdrop of hand-painted murals and photographic light shows.

The Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Work and Performance Extravaganza sure does get around. In years past, the annual multi-media showcase for culturally diverse poets, musicians, performers and artists has taken place at the Knitting Factory (now in Brooklyn), Bowery Poetry Club (swallowed up by Duane Park) and Dixon Place (still thriving on Chrystie St.), But no matter how much times change, the dependable January 1 event refuses to fade away — or budge. "Twenty years and we are still burning," say the organizers, who made this year's theme (Estrellas En El Fuego, or Stars in the Fire) a nod to their unyielding presence in the neighborhood. "We are still burning," they note, "burning words, sounds, noise — bringing our spirits to the stage. We are all stars. We will not be incinerated nor eclipsed."
